Research Triangle Park NC, USA

Users registering.

Mi-Co users, partners and staff contributed to two educational and fun filled days at the Mi-Co User Days 06 held in Research Triangle Park, NC on April 25th and 26th. In its 4 year span, Mi-Co user day has become the premier event focusing on the use of digital ink and handwriting recognition for mobile data capture applications

Day One provided information on the newest release of Mi-Forms from Mi-Co, the data capture devices supported, and the services offered.

Dr. Nathan delivers the keynote address.

Highlights of day one included the Keynote address by Dr. Krishna Nathan, the top services executive in IBM Research and an expert in handwriting recognition technology, and presentations from users on their applications of Mi-Forms.

Jim Clary, Mi-Co Chairman of the Board turned the podium over to Dr. Gene Simpson, Honorary Chairman of User Days who officially opened User Days 2006. Dr. Simpson is currently VP of Medical Affairs for the Solutions Consultant Group at McKesson Provider Technologies. Dr. Simpson originally worked with Mi-Forms in 2001 when he served as the Director of Medical Informatics at Novant Health/Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

Dr. Gene Simpson provides an overview of the use of Mi-Forms at Novant Health in 2001. This presentation provided an excellent historical perspective of where Mi-Forms has been and where it is heading.

During the morning session, Jim Clary provided an overview of where Mi-Co was as a business an some thoughts on the digital ink and e-forms market space.

Following Jim, Barrett Joyner, Sr VP of Marketing and Sales Strategy at Mi-Co provided an overview of the enhanced capabilities in the four key areas of the Mi-Forms System - design, capture, verification and communication.

The new Expression Builder within the Mi-Forms Designer provides a point and click interface for building business rules within the form. Expressions built in this fashion can be edited since using the Expression Builder also generates script code in the background.

Stan Cochran, CEO of CDP, Partner of the Year

In accepting the Partner of the Year Award, Stan Cochran, CEO of CDP stated, "We are honored to be chosen for this award from Mi-Co. Not only has Mi-Cos technology enhanced our portfolio and provided that wow factor in our demonstrations, their people are a true pleasure to work with."

In a special award for innovation in the education sector, Edformation was recognized for the outstanding results achieved using the Mi-Forms Software System for the implementation of a digital ink data capture process for schools implementing the AIMSweb product line. AIMSweb is a formative assessment system that informs the learning process by providing continuous student performance data and reporting improvement to enable evidence-based evaluation and data-driven instruction.

This is the fourth year that Mi-Co has presented awards to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated innovation in the use of mobile data capture and digital ink solutions. Past winners of Mi-Forms User and Partner Awards include representatives of the Internal Revenue Service, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, United States Department of Agriculture, Boston Public Health Commission, and Mi-Co partner, Optiform.

Wilson County Home Health Director and a past winner of the Mi-Forms User of the Year Award, highlighted the latest application they have implemented, the visit management system. This system built with Mi-Forms on the Lenovo Tablets and allows the nurses to access patient information in real time to verify such items as directions to the home, data from past visits, medication lists for each patient and any current or past physician orders. The system allows the health care professions to have maximum flexibility in scheduling patient visits, view reports based on predefined triggers (such as high temperatures), and add to the quality of care by spending less time in the office and more time with the patients.

Each year, Mi-Co selects a charitable organization to receive 10% of all the fees collected by User Day attendees and sponsors. For the fourth year, Mi-Co selected Communities in Schools of Wake County.

Over lunch, the attendees had the opportunity to learn about Communities In Schools of Wake County with a presentation by Executive Director Susan B. Hansell. CIS of Wake County connects students with adult volunteers and other community resources and educational opportunities to help them succeed. The Wake County organization is one of 34 Communities In Schools programs in North Carolina and is part of a national network of programs across the country. In fact, the Wake County program has been recognized as a signature local program by Communities in Schools of North Carolina.

Product Highlights

User Days also provided an excellent venue to highlight an application combining IBM Workplace Forms with Mi-Forms for a complete Mobile Form Application. Dr. Greg Clary, Mi-Co CEO and IBMs Mike Rowling, Solution Architect within the Business Development & Strategic Alliances, IBM Workplace, Portal, & Collaboration Group presented this new mobile eforms application.

This close collaboration between Mi-Co and IBM allows Mi-Co to develop "Mobile Wizards" that enable IBM Workplace Forms users to more effectively deploy popular mobile devices such as Tablet PCs, Ultra Mobile PCs, and Anoto functionality Digital Pens.

The Future of Mi-Forms

In the final formal presentation of day one, Greg Clary provided a look into the future and discussed key capabilities that are on Mi-Cos product and platform roadmap. In addition, Greg highlighted the most recent capabilities into the Mi-Forms System including schema driven forms design. With schema driven design the developer starts with the existing data structure and Mi-Forms field names are automatically generated based on the data. This default structure is an excellent starting point for the forms developer. Click on the image below for the presentation.

Greg also summarized Mi-Cos recent announcement of support of the latest hardware devices for mobile data capture: Ultra Mobile Personal Computers (UMPCs). These small Tablet PCs were announced by Microsoft in March of this year.

Following Gregs discussion of the exciting directions that Mi-Co has planned for the product line, the attendees were invited by Bill Boehning to the IBM Briefing Center and the Lenovo Innovation Center in Research Triangle Park NC. During this tour, the attendees saw the latest IBM and Lenovo solutions, including the new Lenovo Tablet PC.

A Southern Touch

Day one of the conference ended on a "southern" note as Mi-Co hosted a Carolina BBQ dinner (left) where a number of attendees had their caricatures done on a Tablet PC by artist, Bruce Stephenson (right)

Day Two

Day two of Mi-Co user day had a strong focus on partnering as over 80 individuals, most representing a Mi-Co reseller, systems integrator, technology or strategic alliance partner had the chance to discuss specific implementations in which they were currently involved.
