I went shopping online for a new laptop/tablet hybrid. There are various names for these multi-function devices - "convertible", "2-in-1", "hybrids", and "detachables" to mention a few.
My current convertible is a Lenovo X220. With an i5 and SSD storage, it is quite fast. It also has a stylus and an industry leading Wacom digitizer.
After surveying CES 2014 announcements, the device I find most attractive is the Asus Transformer Book Duet TD300. i7 models with up to 1 TB of storage are available. The 13.3" screen is detachable for use as a Tablet, and most interesting, the machine can switch from Windows 8.1 to Android in 4 seconds. My personal productivity tools are on Windows (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visual Studio), but my mobile life is on Android. http://www.asus.com/us/News/hnzqzGZ8TfSnrQTo The major limiting factor I've found so far is the Duet may not be available until March.
My only hesitation is the device does not have a stylus. For years, I have been in the pen computing field, but the stylus seems to be becoming relatively more niche in the mobile space and not less. It remains a surprise to me that Microsoft included a stylus with Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2.
A compelling use case for the stylus is note-taking. I was with a fellow Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) member yesterday, and he surprised me by saying he likes to use a stylus with his iPad to take notes. His current favorite is the Adonit Jot Touch 4 Bluetooth stylus. Palm rejection is superior and with pressure sensitivity the "electronic ink" looks better!
Having Android capability on my main tablet will allow me to enjoy more of the over 1 million apps on the google Play store. In fact, according to this article by CNET citing research by Gartner, both the Play store and the Apple App store have over 1 million apps. The consumer app store world is hyper competitive and loaded with free and $1 apps - making it hard to make money in that world as a business. Alas, I may hold off on my game app idea a bit longer!
