Research Triangle Park, NC - August 20, 2001 -Mi-Co, a leading developer of handwriting solutions for mobile and wireless platforms, and Cardiff Software, a leader in XML-based forms processing and eBusiness automation solutions, announced today that they have teamed to enable a wide selection of handheld and wireless devices to be used for the real-time collection and processing of paper forms.
Under the agreement, Mi-Co will integrate Cardiff's market-leading TELEform Information Capture System with Mi-Forms electronic data-capture solution. Mi-Forms is a unique solution that supports electronic pen-on-paper forms input using a wide range of mobile devices. Integrating Mi-Forms with TELEform will allow enterprise customers to rapidly design forms for print, and will export an XML version of the form to enable automated processing using Mi-Co's Mi-Forms technology.
"Mi-Co is pleased to be partnering with Cardiff to enable the real-time automated processing of paper and digital information using mobile and wireless devices," said Jim Clary, president of Mi-Co. "Our mutual customers will appreciate the flexibility, productivity gains and cost savings delivered by the combined products."
The combined Mi-Co and Cardiff solution works with a digital notepad and a mobile device to connect hand-filled paper forms with automated server-based forms processing. Digital notepads supported by the system include the Mi-NotePad from Mi-Co and the TransNote from IBM.
The Mi-Co and Cardiff solution enables mobile devices to be used for widespread data entry applications. First the system allows users to complete standard-size paper forms versus the tiny input screens found on PDAs and cell phones. Second the system supports natural handwriting input, versus forcing users to use specific handprint input, like Palm's Graffiti. Third, the system makes for "smart paper forms" by applying business rules as the forms are completed. Finally, the system uses powerful server software to instantly convert handwritten input into online data, augmenting the limited processing power found within today's mobile devices.
"Allowing mobile devices to be used for the immediate capture and communication of handwritten forms is compelling, especially in medical, insurance and field inspection applications," said Mark Seamans, chief technical officer for Cardiff. "The combination of Mi-Co and Cardiff technology brings added value and life to handwritten paper forms."
