RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - January, 2003 - Mi-Co, the enterprise mobile data capture company, announced today that it has joined the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance, Inc. (NCHICA).
"Mi-Co is involved with an ever increasing number of healthcare organizations due to the capabilities of our software system, Mi-Forms, to conveniently capture handwritten signatures that are often required to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Working with NCHICA will help us better understand our healthcare customers' working environments and therefore position Mi-Co to more effectively serve the needs of the healthcare community," said Jim Clary, CEO of Mi-Co.
The HIPAA privacy regulations and some state laws include requirements for policies, consents, authorizations, notices and other documents that must be structured in specific ways in order to maintain, use or disclose individually identifiable health information for treatment and other purposes. The deadline for compliance with the privacy regulations is April 14, 2003.
"The HIPAA regulations require hospitals and physicians to provide patients with their Notice of Privacy Practices, and patients must acknowledge receipt of the Notice," said Holt Anderson, Executive Director of NCHICA. "Mi-Co has developed an innovative product approach that captures and stores the patient's signature electronically. This is an option that may be of assistance to our members as they strive to meet the HIPAA requirements."
"With this deadline approaching, Mi-Co has been actively working with hospitals and other healthcare providers to implement HIPAA compliant systems that provide cost effective solutions for obtaining patient consents and authorizations and combining that data with the backend medical systems," added Barrett Joyner, Mi-Co's Senior VP of Sales and Marketing.
