Clearly mobile devices are here to stay, but what device is the best for you or your business application? There are a great number of variables that play into this question, and forming a recommendation relies on needs, desires, and even a little bias. Here I will discuss three of the latest tablet entries competing for your mobile hardware dollars.
iPad Air – As the first widely accepted tablet device, the iPad has an extensive user base in business and consumer hands. Apple’s latest entry is the iPad Air, the thinnest and lightest 10” iPad device to date. The display has an astonishing resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. The same processor that powers the iPhone 5s, the A7 processor, powers this device as well. The price ranges from $499 to $929, from the 16Gb device to the 128Gb version with Wi-Fi + Cellular enabled respectively.
Lenovo Yoga Tablet 8 (Android) – Lenovo has been broadening their product line in the US market to include more device platforms than ever before. Just a few days ago they announced a new line of Android tablets, with the flagship being the 10” device. Many Android devices bring a new twist to the tablet experience, and the Yoga is certainly no exception. Instead of the typical flat tablet commonly available, this product has a roll at the end to make carrying and using it more of a natural experience. This device is priced from $319. Budget conscious shoppers are attracted to the lower price point of Android tablets.
Windows 8.1 Surface Pro 2 – As it adapts to the trend towards mobile devices, Microsoft has improved its Surface line of tablets. Some prefer these devices because of their ability to integrate into the business environment for security and backward compatibility. In addition to a touch interface featured on other tablets, Surface “Pro” tablet devices typically integrate a digitizer pen for input. These devices feature a 1920x1080 display and 64 to 512Gb capacity, and start at $899. Tablets with Windows 8.1 Pro have complete backward compatibility with Windows based software, thus requiring a high level of system resource usage.
